How do I attach wood to an outdoor metal grate?

I have a ground floor apartment, and I have a back door that leads outside. There are currently two doors that I have to open to get out--a regular door and a metal grate. I want to install a screen so that I can leave the indoor door open without being overwhelmed by insects, but it seems ridiculous to add a third door. What I was thinking about doing was to affix a thin layer of wood on the outside of the grating and staple gun some screen to it, but I'm not sure about the best way to attach wood to metal that would stand up to weather conditions. I thought about clamps, but the metal door is difficult to close as it is, so I don't think I could wedge anything, even if it's really thin, in between the door and the frame it closes into. Any suggestions? Or, any ideas about how else I could go about this project?

build a wooden frame for the screen out of 2x2 or similar. once the screen frame is built and screen material is attached, place it against the metal grate door. attach to metal grate door using machine bolts which fit through the grates and wooden frame. washers should be utilized on the head side as well as the wooden side to prevent the head from penetrating the door.
