A company makes three kinds of engineering pencils, Type I, Type II, and Type III and uses two machines, a sander and a polisher. Each type I pencil needs 3 min of sanding and 5 min of polishing. Each type II pencil needs 2 min of sanding and 4 min of polishing. Each type III pencil needs 9 min of sanding and 5 min of polishing. The sander can run no more than 132 hours per week and the polisher can run no more than 159 hours a week. How many pencils of each type can be made each week if the two machines are fully utilized and if the number of type I pencils is to be twice the number of type III pencils?
Let a, b and c be the number of Type I, Type II, and Type III pencils made in a given week.
The amount of sanding done is 3 minutes for every Type I pencil, 2 minutes for each Type II, and 9 minutes for Type III. The sander can't run for more than 132 hours, which is 7920 minutes. So if the sander is run to capacity, we have:
3a + 2b + 9c = 7920
The amount of polishing done is 5 minutes for every Type I pencil, 4 minutes for every Type II, 5 minutes for Type III. If we use up the maximum amount of minutes for polishing which is 159*60 = 9540, then we have:
5a + 4a + 5c = 9540
Finally, we're told a=2c, which is the same as saying a - 2c = 0.
