Why are DIY Painting Products Such Poor Quality?
Why are DIY painting products so crap?
No offense to home decorators, but they need all the help they can get. Unfortunately, what do they get sold at B&Q or Home Depot? Crap.
No wonder their filling work looks amateurish, when they have home-brand filler that is coarser than pro filler and extra hard to sand smooth.
No wonder their painted wall finishes are patchy and full of roller lines when the bargain basement sleeves they are sold have no pile on the edges and shoddy pile everywhere else.
Is it any wonder DIY enthusiasts hate painting ceilings, when the "ceiling paint" they are sold is almost devoid of pigment. And it isn't cheap either, because it takes 3 coats to cover what pro quality paint is designed to cover in 2 good coats, so its per square foot price is actually higher than if they had bought "proper paint".
And what is the thinking selling an unskilled painter an oil brush that sheds its hairs as soon as look at you, and can't keep its shape for more than a couple of minutes?
And why are the plastic sheets so flimsy that a hard stare will leave a hole in it just where the crap ceiling paint is about to drip onto the carpet below?
And why is masking tape sold in 25m rolls? Why isn't it sold in proper 50m lengths, plenty enough to deal with the requirements of a standard size room?. Instead, the half size roll leaves the DIYer short, and they incur all the time wasting and stress that comes with not having enough material for the job.
And finally, what is it with the trend for fancy paint containers that look like they contain 2.5 litres but on closer inspection only hold 2.25? This is a long slippery slope to the rip-off that is a US gallon of paint.
Please, consumers, write to your paint manufacturers and DIY stores and tell them you are not prepared to buy into their sly marketing ploys any more. Everyone wants their painting and decorating work to go smoothly and to look good at the end. The happier people are, the more likely they are to keep decorating, so sell the best stuff for the job - superstores charge enough.
Then again, I forgot, marketers don't know how to paint, and don't want to learn what it is like to use their own crappy products - they earn enough to employ a pro to do it properly for them.
